![]() Reductions or removals in one country can count as credits in another country that has paid or traded for them. Kyoto provided three mechanisms by which signatories could obtain carbon credits: joint implementation, the Clean Development Mechanism, and emissions trading. Countries could meet this goal either by actually reducing their emissions or by acquiring carbon credits that represented reductions elsewhere. Specifically, industrialized countries signing the protocol agreed to reduce their greenhouse emissions to 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2012. The Kyoto Protocol defined targets for reduced greenhouse emissions from its industrialized signatories, namely, all the industrialized countries except the United States and Australia. In 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) committed all its signatories-virtually every country in the world-to “formulate, implement, publish and regularly update national and, where appropriate, regional programmes containing measures to mitigate climate change by addressing anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks.” In 1997, to fulfill this earlier commitment, most countries signed the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC. Historical Background and Scientific Foundations In this article, only carbon credits that are a tradable commodity in a legally defined emissions trading system are discussed. It is discussed in the entry “Offsetting” in this set. ![]() ![]() Offsetting of this kind is not a tradable commodity but a one-time purchase made for reasons of conscience or public relations. ![]() The term carbon credits is sometimes used interchangeably with the term carbon offsets, but the latter often refers to voluntary purchase by businesses or individuals of decreased CO 2 emissions in order to cancel out their own emissions (for example, paying a company to plant trees to cancel out the carbon released by one's air travel). The largest system of carbon credits and emissions trading was established by the Kyoto Protocol in 2005. Participation by polluters in emissions trading markets may be voluntary, as with the Chicago Climate Exchange, or mandatory, as with the European Climate Exchange. They are created by governments and bought and sold on emissions trading markets. Carbon credits are financial abstractions, similar to money, that entitle their possessor to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2) or other greenhouse gases. ![]() ![]() The easiest (and safest) to use is Kodi’s own repository of apps, available from the main Kodi dashboard. However, this issue is not present in “triplet” refractors which use three lenses instead of two in order to eliminate the chromatic aberration. If you’ve ever used binoculars, since they are basically two refracting telescopes mounted side-by-side, the chromatic aberration is something you’ve probably already experienced. The special lenses that the refractors use allow them to bend and focus the light, rather than simply reflecting it, in order to give an image.ĭue to the special lenses they use, the refractors can suffer from chromatic aberration, giving an unwanted outline of color around the edges of an object. The short side of the reflecting telescopes is that it can be difficult to keep the optics in alignment if the user is not experienced enough. This makes them a great entry-level telescope for beginners. ![]() They are also highly cost-effective when compared to other similarly-sized refractors, as the reflecting telescopes are much cheaper to make thanks to the low cost of manufacturing for the mirrors they use. The pros of the reflector are that they are better suited for deep-sky observing and have no chromatic aberration, aka ‘color fringing’. However, keep in mind that some reflecting telescopes do not come with a telescope diagonal, which means that for those telescopes the image will be upside down, if the telescope uses an even number of mirrors, or reversed to the side if it uses an odd number of mirrors. The way it works is by having a curved mirror position at the bottom of the telescope that reflects the light that comes from the opening at the other side, which then is reflected to a secondary mirror and then to the eyepiece where you can observe the image. Using this method to create an image makes the reflecting telescopes not have the vulnerability of having color aberration. The use of a curved mirror or mirrors, depending on the design as it can use either a single or a combination of curved mirrors, gives this telescope the ability to reflect observed images back to our eyes. On the other hand, the refractor telescopes use special lenses in order to form an image, similar to that of the binoculars. To put it simply, the reflector telescopes use a combination of curved mirrors in order to form an image by reflecting the light. On the market the most popular types of telescopes are the reflector and the refractor, but what’s the difference? So you’re looking to take up stargazing as your new hobby, yet you’re not certain what kind of a telescope would be better for you. ![]() ![]() "Game of the Year Editions" or "Complete Editions", came with the patch already on the disc. ![]() ![]() Picking the right scanner app for mobile depends significantly on what you plan to scan and what you do with the results. When you capture a document - a restaurant menu, a high school graduation program, an accounting form - it’s important to square up the image, reduce glare and (optionally) automate text recognition. Smartphone camera quality is remarkable nowadays, but it’s optimized for photography, not scanning. Click, click, click…and a 12-page document was captured and instantly saved online. It worked so fast that we felt like a movie spy taking photos of top-secret documents in an underground lair. ![]() This was the coolest of the scanner apps for mobile we tested and the most fun to use. Do budget time to clean up the text a bit. Genius Scan Ultra’s text recognition is the best of the bunch, but still far from perfect. We had to clean up the text a bit after scanning (see photo example below), but still, it does the best text recognition of the bunch.Īnd while Genius Scan’s Basic version is a fully functional free app loaded with features, in order to use the text recognition (OCR) and PDF encryption features, you need to subscribe to the Genius Scan Plus ($1 per month, billed monthly at The Grizzly Labs) or Genius Scan Ultra version. The only real items on our wishlist for Genius Scan Ultra would be that we didn’t need to budget extra time for nitpicky editing. If your archiving goal is text recognition, then Genius Scan Ultra is the winning app it performed the best among the five apps tested. Or you can access files on your local network using Wi-Fi sharing.ĭo you need to digitize a lot of documents quickly and save them to a cloud platform? Then this is the easy pick, and again our favorite. The options for exporting scanned files are extensive, with a subset including Box, Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive and Microsoft OneNote. While the paid version includes unlimited cloud storage, you’ll probably want to share the files elsewhere. After making sure text recognition was applied, we were able to save our 1973 event program cover as a JPG and share it to Facebook. The app also let us save single-page scans as JPGs (multi-page scans are exported as PDFs by default). We were able to use Genius Scan Ultra to save single-page scans as plain text or Microsoft Word (using OCR) and multi-page scans as PDF documents (you can also do the latter, optionally, with encryption). For instance, it picked up “contract” from an optical character recognition (OCR) scan, and scanning an event program caused the app to (accurately) suggest a file name of Jan. Genius Scan Ultra offers tag suggestions based on location, calendar events and document contents. We could add tags (recipe, Frankfurt) to make searching easier. Esther Schindler/CNN Underscoredįile name templates were easily edited. Then the app straightens, aligns and crops the image - without you touching a button. Genius Scan Ultra brightly highlights the item in orange that it’s about to capture, which gives you confidence that it’s grabbing the right information. If you told us we could only continue using one app, then we’d name Genius Scan Ultra as our overall pick. We also consulted with two experts who gave us archiving and organization tips on how to prepare for our large scanning project.Īfter several weeks of testing, we concluded that choosing the best app is a matter of matching your particular scanning needs with an app’s strengths. We tested CamScanner Premium, Genius Scan Ultra by The Grizzly Labs, Microsoft Lens, PhotoScan by Google Photos, and SwiftScan Pro by Maple Media. To help you choose the best scanner app, we tested five scanner apps on our iPhone, scanning several boxes of photos and documents. Scanner apps can help you archive personal documents or family vacation photos, turn tax forms into portable document format (PDF) documents, capture travel receipts for expense reports or turn school handouts into readable text. The best scanner apps for mobile devices help you capture images with minimal distortion, save them in useful forms and share the files online easily - without the need for a cumbersome desktop scanner.
